Lady Flyers' J.V. softball keeps winning streak going
The Maryvale junior varsity softball team won three straight nailbiters in recent action, surviving one-run games against Depew, Starpoint and Cheektowaga Central.
Last Wednesday, the Lady Flyers came back to edge Depew, 3-2, as freshman Jennie Heisler recorded the game-winning hit in the bottom of the ninth inning. Pitcher Becca Gengo was superb, striking out 12 in a complete-game effort. Eighth grader Mindy Odrobina contributed a game-tying, two-run double in the bottom of the sixth.
On Monday, Maryvale outlasted Starpoint, 4-3, as Heisler recorded a go-ahead, RBI single in the top of the ninth inning. Odrobina struck out 17 batters in a sensational pitching effort.
Tuesday, the Lady Flyers won a 3-2 decision against Central, as Dani Gmerek knocked in the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning on a single. Stephanie Dommer contributed a game-tying, RBI single in the bottom of the sixth.
