Cleve Hill grad Burton signs with Cincinnati
Following two years with the Denver Broncos, Cleveland Hill High School graduate Antwon Burton is bringing his National Football League services a bit closer to home.
Burton, a defensive tackle and 2001 graduate of Cleve Hill, signed a two-year contact with the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday.
The 6-foot, 2-inch, 325-pound Burton appeared in six games last season, making eight tackles, before finishing the campaign on the Broncos' practice squad. He was inactive for Denver's 2007 season opener on the road against the Buffalo Bills. The Times spoke to Burton after the contest regarding his spending time again with friends and family in the Western New York area.
Burton was signed by Denver as an undrafted free agent in 2006 after completing a stellar, two-year collegiate career at Temple University. He started his college football career at Erie Community College, starring for Dennis Greene's Kats squad.
In 2006, Burton appeared in one game for the Broncos, seeing action in a road contest against the Oakland Raiders.
At Cleveland Hill, Burton played both football and basketball, leading the Eagles' gridiron squad- coached by Dennis Mason- to the Section VI Class C title in 2000. In 2001, he was selected as the Class C sectional Defensive Player of the Year.
