Editorial A special season is upon us
Cheektowaga schools boast many fine athletic teams and athletes who, day in and day out, play to their utmost ability in search of an ultimate goal: a championship. Our schools in recent years have brought home state championships in track and hockey while earning sectional championships in basketball and football.
However, there is another group of area students who also play to a high degree, but due to the nature of their performances, don't receive the weekly reports that local athletes enjoy on the Cheektowaga Times sports pages. We're referring to the actors, musicians and the behindthe scenes people who make local high school musicals rousing successes each year.
These fine groups of students and adults deserve to perform before packed houses each night at every venue. Their countless hours memorizing lines and dance steps, hitting the correct tempo, and adding just the right amount of rouge culminates in three two-hour performances. Unlike sports, a high school musical lasts one weekend, and the next production won't be seen for another year. They deserve all of the attention they receive. This year's selections include a mix of traditional and contemporary works.
Next weekend, February 8-9, the Maryvale High School players take to their auditorium's stage to perform Little Shop of Horrors. It's the first of several high school performances coming up during the next nine weeks. Some of the local middle schools have performances as well.
The rest of the high school musical schedule includes:
Cleveland Hill, February 29-March 1, The Sound of Music.
Depew, March 14-15, Beauty and the Beast.
St. Mary's of Lancaster, March 13-15, Copacabana.
John F. Kennedy, March 28-30, Hello Dolly.
Central, April 4-5, High School Musical.
We encourage our readers to take in a local performance or two. You will leave the auditorium with a smile on your face.
