Wow! Record warmth Monday and Tuesday was a welcome surprise for Cheektowaga residents who shed their winter coats for spring jackets when they ventured outside. Eva and two-year-old Riley Roberts went for a stroll Tuesday afternoon at Town Park. At right, Roger and Rosalie Folts of Grand Prix Drive enjoyed a walk through Stiglmeier Park. Tuesday's official high at the National Weather Service in Cheektowaga, recorded at 2:52 p.m., was 66 degrees, 35 degrees above the average. Just after 2 p.m., the thermometer outside John F. Kennedy High School neared 70 degrees. Monday's high temperature of 63 degrees was also a record high for the date. Temperatures began to drop overnight as high winds swept into the area, ushering in a reminder that January in Western New York is supposed to be cold. The winds knocked out power as trees were uprooted, some landing on power lines. Como Park Boulevard, between Bennett and Union roads was closed for a while Wednesday morning when a tree brought down power lines. The winds also pulled up part of the roof at the Sloan Senior Center. (Times photos)
