JFK boys bowling rolls along with another win

If someone would have told John F. Kennedy boys bowling coach Pete Odrobina before the season that his team would be 4-1 after five games, he certainly would have taken it. By beating league opponent Buffalo Academy of Science last week, the Bears gave Odrobina a nice Christmas present: four wins in their first five matches.

"No one on the team, including myself, expected us to be 4-1 at this stage," Odrobina said after the Bears' 7-0 win over BAS. "But now that we are, let's pick it up and see what we can accomplish."

Despite its inconsistent scores, JFK has found a way to win early this campaign, thanks largely in part to freshmen Tyler Harhigh and Zak Kuzara, who are among the Bears' top pin-getters. Eight grader Zack Uzar has also scored well.

"He's starting to come around with his game. He's having fun, staying focused and, most importantly, improving on making his spares," Odrobina said of the up-and-coming Uzar. "He was just putting too much pressure on himself before."

Against BAS, Harhigh recorded a team-high game of 213, while senior Mike Kaminski contributed a 212. Uzar led the Bears' "B" squad with games of 166, 164 and 175.

Despite his team's fast start, Odrobina said JFK's scores must improve.

"We'll see what happens after the holidays," the longtime coach said. "Do we have it in us to be contenders or just pretenders? It remains to be seen."
