Lady Flyers are perfect to start hoops season

It might not always get the prettiest of wins, but the Maryvale Lady Flyers basketball team keeps churning out victories early this season, improving to 5-0 overall after a 52-45 road triumph against Amherst Monday.

After holding just a 23-22 halftime lead, the Lady Flyers (3-0 in ECICIII) gave themselves some cushion by outscoring Amherst 17-10 in the third quarter. Sophomore point guard Olivia Gmerek contributed a solid all-around performance with 13 points, five assists and four steals, while junior center Rebecca Denee hauled down a team-high 15 rebounds.

Senior guard Joey Ruderman added 14 points.

The Lady Flyers return to action tomorrow when they host league opponent Springville at 7:30 p.m.

Depew, Central each win

back-to-back league games

After dropping their ECIC-III openers to unbeaten Pioneer and Maryvale, the Depew and Cheektowaga Central girls basketball teams each came back with solid league wins, respectively.

The Lady Wildcats (3-1 overall) edged Springville last Thursday, 44- 38, as junior forward Alexis Wayne led the locals with 17 points. In Tuesday's 45-24 victory against Tonawanda, sophomore guard Jenna Majka led Depew with 12 points, as the Lady 'Cats opened a 26-8 halftime lead.

Central senior forward Breanna Harris, meanwhile, has come up big for the Lady Warriors (2-1), posting 16 points and 12 rebounds in a 44- 36 win at Amherst Friday. Harris also exploded for 28 points in a 58-51 home victory against Starpoint.

Senior guard Margo Pagano has also played well, contributing 11 points and 13 steals against Amherst and 15 points against Starpoint Tuesday. Her twin sister, Taylor, scored 13 points against Amherst.

Depew and Central will square off tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. on the Lady Wildcats' home court in a key earlyseason matchup.

Lady Eagles fall to 2-1;

JFK wins two of last three

Cleveland Hill's girls basketball team is off to a 2-1 start after thumping the Buffalo Academy of Science, 57-15, last Thursday and losing to Lackawanna on Tuesday, 39-31.

Against Buffalo Academy of Science, senior forward Alyssa Luksch led the locals with 18 points, while fellow senior forward Kemba Buchanan had a solid all-around performance with 15 points, seven rebounds and three blocks. Sophomore Taylor Eldridge added 12 points.

In Tuesday's loss, Eldridge led the Lady Eagles with 10 points.

Meanwhile, JFK (2-3) shot just 19 percent from the field in a 48-37 loss to Akron Saturday during last weekend's Akron Hoop Festival. Senior forward Melissa Schultz led Kennedy with 13 points and 17 rebounds, as she and junior guard Krissy Wesolowski were selected to the All-Tourney Team.

In the Tourney opener last Thursday against Cardinal O'Hara, Schultz led the locals again with 14 points and 14 boards. However, junior Amanda Zanghi was the hero for Kennedy, as she nailed two free throws with five seconds remaining to give JFK a one-point lead. The Lady Bears hung on to beat O'Hara, 58-56.

Despite 22 points from Wesolowski last Thursday, JFK dropped a 46-45 decision to league opponent Lackawanna. A Lady Bears turnover- in which a JFK player was bumped out of bounds with 15 seconds left but was not given the benefit of a foul call- doomed Kennedy. Schultz hauled down a game-high 17 rebounds.
