Ups and downs in town
Editorial

Today we offer some local observations based on what we've seen and experienced during typical ups and downs in recent weeks.

Buckle up! Police agencies occasionally run "blitzes" during which they crack down on persons who fail to wear a seat belt, in violation of New York State's seat belt law. (New York lawmakers are very concerned about your health, especially when they can make a few bucks while they're at it.) During a recent crackdown, a Times employee was ticketed for such as she traveled through Cedargrove Heights- our neighborhood- during her lunch break. (She freely admits her guilt.) The officer told her the police have received complaints about drivers using Cedargrove side streets for a short cut. Our employee told him that she wasn't cutting through because she works in the neighborhood. "Where do you work?" Upon hearing her answer he replied, "Well, we have this program called 'Buckle Up New York.' Maybe you ought to write an article to educate you and your readers about it." Point taken, but we'll take it a step farther and offer an editorial. So, buckle up, Cheektowaga, because you never know when you'll receive a ticket from a police officer who lacks public relations skills.

Fearless prediction (the lowdown): There are six candidates seeking the sanitation supervisor's post. There will be interviews, and the position is "competitive" through civil service, but who's kidding whom here? Four of the candidates serve on the Town Democratic Committee, including the party's chairman, Frank Max. He'll likely get it. Politics will be involved, but Max's position and experience as a sanitation supervisor at least softens this observation. Political observers indicate that the next move in Town Hall will also be worth keeping an eye on.

Hooping it up: Did you know that Cheektowaga Central is expected to be "in the mix" in its boys' basketball conference this season? That's one of six sentences or notes from the mainstream media's high school basketball preview. This is where your local newspaper makes a difference: Steve Dlugosz's boys and girls basketball previews in the November 29 edition of the Cheektowaga Times explained why things are looking up at Central, and offered depth on all of our local squads. In fact, Steve's reporting is so good that one Western New York reporter chooses to let Steve ask all of the questions after games and then cherry-pick the best quotes. Read the latest in the Cheektowaga sports scene every week in the Times.
