Town Hall roads closed Nov. 14
Access to Town Hall and other buildings on the town campus will be restricted to one Union Road location for two hours on November 14 to accommodate a state traffic study.
The study will force the closings of entrances to Town Hall and the police and courts building between 3-5 p.m.
Crews from the New York State Department of Transportation will use the period to study traffic flow in and out of the town campus. The study may determine if the campus would be better served by one Union Road entrance with a traffic light instead of the several that currently exist.
"If you are planning to reach Town Hall during those hours, the only entrance will be at the old incinerator plant; the main entrance to the parking lot of the central campus," said Supervisor James J. Jankowiak.
Lieutenant Gary Schmidt of the Cheektowaga Police Department's Traffic Division said that Cheektowaga asked the DOT about installing a traffic signal when plans were being finalized for the reconstruction of Union and its intersection with Walden Avenue.
However, the DOT said that a traffic impact study was required, and they did not want to perform the study until reconstruction, which included a middle turn lane, was completed.
"This is a follow-up to that," Schmidt said. "They want to perform a delay study to test for backups on the campus to use as one of the criteria determining if a signal is warranted."
Congressman Brian Higgins (D- 27) has appropriated $800,000 to help install the signal and redesign the campus roads to accommodate a signal.
