Romanos to represent Depew golf at sectionals
A pair of brothers on the Depew golf team are heading back to the Section VI championships after producing impressive performances at Monday's Erie County Interscholastic Conference championships at Diamond Hawk golf course. grader, along with his older brother, Tom, a junior, qualified for sectionals after placing fifth and 15th, respectively, among the top 84 golfers in ECIC.
Andrew Romano, who finished tied with four other area golfers with a score of 78 (front nine holes- 38, back nine- 40), is making his second straight trip to sectionals. Tom Romano, who is making his second trip to sectionals in the last three years, finished with a score of 83, shooting 44 and 39 on the front and back nine, respectively.
Clarence's Pat Sheedy won the ECIC title by shooting a 72.
Wildcats head coach Rick Wargala, whose team completed its second straight undefeated season (12-0 overall) and ECIC Small School North title, praised Andrew Romano's composure.
"Andy has such a calm demeanor; you wouldn't be able to tell by the way he walks if he shot a two or a ten on the round," Wargala told the Times. "He could be the premier player in ECIC very soon."
Senior Tom Walter and ECIC alternate Ryan Driscoll, a junior, each missed sectionals by an excruciating one shot by scoring 85. What makes Walter's absence even more disappointing is that this is the second consecutive year that he's missed sectionals by a single shot.
"I feel bad for (Walter) because I know he had the talent to make a run in sectionals," Wargala said.
Fellow senior Brandon Guay missed sectionals by just three shots.
Sectionals won't take place until May at Briarwood Country Club in Hamburg.
Depew will participate in the ECIC Team Championships today at 2:30 p.m. at Lancaster Country Club, taking on the other ECIC winners, including: Clarence (10-0 in Large School North), Orchard Park (9-1 in Large School South) and Iroquois (9-1 in Small School South).
Walter and Tom Romano ranked No. 2 and 3 in nine-hole rankings for the season, shooting averages of 37.4 and 38, respectively. Andrew Romano finished ninth with an average of 39.6.
