Close shave: Markel wins Dem slot by six
Charlie Markel will occupy the third and final position on the Democratic line for town council in the November 6 general election after he was declared a winner by a scant six votes.
Markel was declared the winner last Thursday following the Erie County Board of Elections' recanvass of all voting districts. He edged Stan Kaznowski, 2,841 to 2,835.
Elections Commissioner Dennis Ward oversaw most of the recount, which included for the first time all absentee, emergency and legitimate affidavit ballots.
Kaznowski held a 27-vote lead after all but two districts were counted on September 18, which was primary day. His lead was reduced to 10 on September 19 after the missing districts reported their results.
Elections officials performed a recount on September 24 and found that the results from one voting machine were inaccurate, undercounting Markel's votes. That swung the election in the challenger's favor.
