| Maryvale football coach Steve Griffin told his team after last week's home loss to perennial Class A South power Iroquois that the Flyers were just as good as any team in the league, but they still needed to prove themselves. On Saturday, Maryvale answered its coach's challenge with a resounding victory- one that clearly says, "We belong here."
The Flyers (2-1 overall, 1-1 in league play) scored early and often against "A" foe Hamburg with a flurry of points, opening a 35-0 halftime lead en route to a 55-0 spanking of the Bulldogs on Maryvale's home field.
Junior running back Brooks Estarfaa continued his strong early season play, rushing 11 times for 175 yards and two touchdowns. The Flyers finished with a whopping 433 yards on 36 carries.
Junior quarterback Jamie Quigley threw a 32-yard scoring pass to fellow junior Scott Jarmusz, and also ran 22 yards for another TD. Other scores were contributed by senior fullback Kyle Leon (two 5-yard runs), junior Steve Ferrandino (oneyard plunge), senior John Hugar (49- yard run) and senior Jake Heisler (safety on a sack in the end zone).
"Now we know what we can do against an 'A' school," Griffin said of the big win. "The guys just had to believe in themselves. We played with everything we had today. We know we can compete with anyone."
The Flyers will face another "A" opponent at home Saturday when they take on West Seneca East at 2 p.m. The Trojans enter the game 1-2 overall and in league play.
