CHILDREN’S ACTIVITIES

Toddler Time at the Anna M. Reinstein (2580 Harlem Road) and Julia Boyer Reinstein (1030 Losson Road) libraries. For children two years of age accompanied by an adult, Toddler Time is designed as a first learning experience in a library setting and to instill in children a love for books. September 22: Project WILD Facilitator Training in the education center of the Reinstein Woods, 93 Honorine Drive, off Como Park Boulevard about one mile west of Transit Road. In this training session you will learn what you need to know to become a Project WILD facilitator, including Project WILD history and goals, practice facilitating activities, characteristics of a good workshop and facilitator dilemmas. September 26: The Cheektowaga Veterans Affairs Committee will host a forum on medical benefits for veterans on September 26 in Town Hall, 3301 Broadway at Union Road, at 7 p.m. Speakers at the forum include Louis Palma, Erie County Veterans; Michael Finnegan from the Veterans Affairs of Western New York Health Care System; Cindy Wilson, VA Customer Service Coordinator; Carol Griffith, Veterans Service Center; Evange Conley, VA Public Affairs Officer and Brian Hess, Cheektowaga Town Assessor. A question-and-answer session will follow the presentations from each speaker.

October 26-27: The Health Ministry Committee at Cleveland Heights Christian Church at 4774 Union Road, just south of Cleveland Drive, is sponsoring a Conflict Resolution Workshop. It is essential that those involved participate in both days: Oct. 26, 5:30-9:30 p.m. (includes dinner) and Oct. 27, 9 a.m.-6 p.m. (includes lunch). Fee: $30. The workshop is held through the Center for Non-Violence to carry on Sister Karen Klimczak’s vision. The challenge for each participant is to share the teachings and experiences on conflict management and dealing with anger with others. Maryvale Community Education will present many classes this fall. Tap dancing, bow-making, preparing for the TOEFL exam, selling on Craig’s List, and baton twirling for kids are just a few of the hundreds of courses offered. Classes in fitness, fine arts and dance, personal growth, health, home improvement, crafts, computers and special interest areas are scheduled. Youth programs are also offered. Classes begin September 24 and continue through early December. Programs are held in various Maryvale School System buildings. September 30: 27th Annual Show and Sale of Dollhouse Miniatures at Hearthstone Manor, 333 Dick Road, Depew. 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Admission: $4.50 for adults, $2.00 for children under 12. Dollhouse door prize. A portion of the proceeds will benefit Hospice. Sponsored by Western New York Miniature Enthusiasts.

October 6: The Crosstown Quilters will host a quilt class on October 6 from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. at the Julia Boyer Reinstein Library, 1030 Losson Road. The project is Barb Moll’s Christmas Star. September 26: The Lancaster/Depew Carolers seek new members to join their group. You do not have to live in the Lancaster/Depew area, but you must be at least 18 years old. Become a part of the spirit of the holidays. Join the Lancaster/Depew Carolers for a short, joyful season filled with all the traditional holiday songs as they sing at local schools, nursing homes and other organizations. September 24 and 27: Harold Goldberg, author of “My Life Among the Serial Killers,” a look inside the minds of the world’s most notorious killers, will speak at Cheektowaga’s libraries. Goldberg will delve into the mind of serial killers such as John Wayne Gayce as well as other notorious criminals. Goldberg will appear at the Anna M. September 28: Members of Doyle Hose Company No. 2 will hold their annual food drive to benefit the Food Bank of Western New York. Firefighters and their families will take to the streets in the district to collect food, beginning at 6 p.m. Residents who wish to participate are asked to place their nonperishable food items outside their front doors for pick up.
