Buildup of grease in roof vent starts fire at Rosina Foods
A smoky fire caused by grease in a roof vent at Rosina Foods was extinguished by South Line firefighters on July 28 as an inhouse fire suppression system was credited for dousing part of the blaze.
South Line Fire Chief Doug Wilkowski further credited Rosina officials for quickly evacuating the building.
Wilkowski said that Rosina is one of a handful of companies that perform fire drills with South Line every two years. He said that the drills paid off.
"We knew where to find the manager as soon as we got there," Wilkowski explained. "Maintenance workers and the manager met us at the door and brought us to (the fire.) That's big because it's a maze in there."
A police officer who arrived at the building prior to the firefighters reported heavy smoke. Wilkowski said that the smoke, which obscured some nearby buildings, was likely created by the fire suppression system.
The 11:05 p.m. fire started after the company had installed a new fryer.
"They put it in and something happened," Wilkowski said. "Apparently they didn't clean the grease from the stack that vents to the roof."
Doyle and Forks firefighters assisted at the site. Firefighters from East Seneca and Twin District stood by at South Line's fire hall to respond to any additional emergencies.
