Jeff Sell, Tom Mazur file election papers
Designating petitions filed with the Erie County Board of Elections indicate at least five candidates are interested in representing the Eighth District of the Erie County Legislature, including the two who faced off for the post in the 2005 general election.
Republican Jeff Sell, who two years ago lost to Democrat Tom Mazur, has filed again. Mazur is seeking the Democratic endorsement, along with Debbie Kubiak, Joshua J. Penfold and John M. Dudziak.
The five candidates were listed among the thousands of pages reviewed by the Times on Tuesday at the Board of Elections office in downtown Buffalo.
New York State's five largest parties; Democrat, Republican, Conservative, Independence and Working Families; use the September primary to nominate their candidates. As a result, designating petitions must be filed.
Petitions were required to be filed by July 19, with July 23 listed as the last day to authorize non-party (for example, a Democrat seeking the Conservative nod) candidates.
The Cheektowaga Democratic Committee announced its slate of candidates on May 29. The slate consists of Mary Holtz for supervisor; Stan Kaznowski, Jeff Swiatek and Richard Zydel, councilmembers;
Alice Magierski, clerk;
Tom Kolbert, town justice and
Sell, Tom Mazur Mark Wegner, highway superintendent.
Also filing petitions for town
election papers positions on the Democratic side are Charlie Markel for councilmember and Diane Benczkowski for clerk. Both ran as Republicans for councilmember positions in 2005.
No Republican candidate appeared to be listed for supervisor.
Filing designating petitions for town offices on the Republican side are: Richard J. Maisano, Gerald Kaminski and C.W. Stewart for councilmember; Susan Nolder for clerk; Kolbert for town justice and Scott Ryloczynski for highway superintendent.
Many Democratic and Republican candidates are seeking to run on the other three lines.
Republicans Stewart and Nolder hope to win Independence party lines and fellow GOP candidate Maisano hopes to gain support from the Working Families line.
The town's Democratic slate has filed on the Independence and Conservative lines. Kolbert hopes to earn the Working Families designation as well.
While there is a possible four-way race on the Democratic side for the county legislature's eighth district- which encompasses most of Cheektowaga- another rematch from 2005 is shaping up in the ninth district.
Timothy Wroblewski is challenging fellow Democrat and incumbent Cynthia Locklear. Locklear unseated Wroblewski in 2005.
A wild card in the ninth district is Julie Lewinski, who has filed on the Independence line.
Timothy Kennedy will face an Independence party primary challenge from Ricky T. Donovan Sr.
