Hospital honors Times as community leader
The Cheektowaga Times was presented with the St. Joseph Hospital Foundation's Community Leader award at its annual Caritas Awards Reception Tuesday at the Park Country Club in Amherst.
The Times was recognized for its philanthropy toward the hospital's charitable events and for its support of St. Joseph since it opened in 1960.
Times Publisher Elizabeth Allis Gruber and Newsroom Director John Hopkins accepted the award for the newspaper.
The Times has been vocal in its support of St. Joseph Hospital since a New York health care commission recommended last November that the hospital be shut down. The hospital is appealing the decision, and local lawmakers in Albany are also working to prevent the hospital from closing.
"Their proactive approach to re- porting the facts, along with their ongoing support is one reason that we are honoring them this evening," the foundation explained in the evening's program.
Others receiving awards from the foundation included Dr. Alexander Gelfer, M.D.; Scott T. Wallace; Donna Fabry, RN, BSN, MSN and Reverend Dale Stanley.
Gelfer was recognized as the foundation's Physician Honoree. He joined the hospital's medical staff in 1992. One year later, Gelfer was appointed medical director of the sleep laboratory, which he opened after developing the SleepCare program.
