Guest Editorial Flag Day
Although flag celebrations date as far back as 1885, it was not until 1949 that President Truman signed an Act of Congress designating June 14th of each year as National Flag Day. Now, on Flag Day and every day we are proud to recognize this symbol of our unity as a nation and the great freedom it represents.
In recognition of Flag Day I would like to remind residents that among the many constituent services we provide, my office is pleased to assist those requesting American flags flown over the United States Capitol Building. With sufficient notice, flags can be flown over the Capitol on a specific date, including weekends and holidays, and can be dedicated to a person, organization or event of your choice. Each flag is individually boxed and includes a certificate of dedication. There are some nominal fees associated with flying a flag over the Capitol, and the price varies according to the size and material of the flag you request.
To download a flag request form go to my web site at http://higgins.house.gov/constituentservices.asp and click on the "flags" link. Through this web site you can also learn about other constituent services available through my office. In addition to flag requests, we can help with federal issues including: veterans' benefits, social security, passports, military academy nominations, federal grants and student loan information.
If you prefer to meet with someone on my staff to request assistance with a federal issue we also provide "Congress on Your Corner," satellite hours in locations across the district in an effort to better serve you. Residents are encouraged to visit a satellite site to share their concerns, questions and ideas with a representative from my office. "Congress on Your Corner" dates are posted on my web site at http://higgins.house.gov. Members of my staff are also always available to assist you in my Erie County, Chautauqua County or Washington, DC offices.
If you are interested in requesting a flag flown over the Capitol or need assistance with another issue feel free to call my
local office at 716-852-3501.
