Local softball teams take it on the chin
The quarterfinal round of the Section VI playoffs was quite unkind to local baseball and softball teams, as all five remaining in the postseason were eliminated Tuesday afternoon.
Surprisingly, four of the five were ousted despite enjoying a higher seed than its opponent and home field advantage in the matchup of quarterfinal advancers.
In Class A softball, No. 2 seeded Depew, after an undefeated Erie County Interscholastic Conference- III title winning regular season, lost 6-2 to No. 7 West Seneca East, while No. 3 Maryvale, also of ECIC-III, dropped an 11-0 decision to No. 6 Hamburg. ECIC-IV softball champions and No. 2 Cleveland Hill also fell to a lower seed, No. 7 Fredonia, 10-1 in Class B action.
In Class B baseball, sixth-seeded JFK lost 6-3 in eight innings despite being a decided favorite against a No. 14 seed in Southwestern. The lone lower seed to lose was the 13thseeded Depew baseball team, which after pulling a first round upset of Cheektowaga Central last week, dropped an 11-4 decision at No. 12 Dunkirk in a contest of Class A squads.
Tuesday's results leave the local diamonds without a representative in today's semifinal round and no chance of crowning a sectional champion this weekend. In-depth coverage of all local teams can be found on pages 10-12.
