The Cheektowaga Central track and field team proved to be the best of six maroon-clad schools, at least for Saturday, in the girls event for the Maroon Track Classic at Dunkirk High School.

The Lady Warriors won the meet with a score of 147. Juniors and twin sisters Margo and Taylor Pagano, as well as junior captain Renee Valentino and Alyssa Kozakevich, comprised Central's 4x100-meter relay team that finished first with a time of 52.4 seconds.

On the boys' side, Central finished third with 87, as the throwing tandem of senior Justin Babirad (discus) and junior Jake Havernick (shot put) won their events with distances of 114 feet, 11 inches and 41'2.5," respectively.

In other local action, the Depew girls track and field team suffered its first loss of the season on Tuesday, 83-58, but sent several athletes to sectionals in the process.

Seniors Kristen Wodarczak and Megan Lindenau each had seasonbest and Section VI championshipqualifying performances in the discus events with distances of 88 feet, 2.5 inches and 91'1.5," respectively.

Other sectional-qualifying performances were turned in by the 4x400- meter relay team (seniors Jen Godson and Jordan Schrimmel, junior Katie Wild and freshman Jenna Majka- 54.2 seconds) and the 4x1,600 relay team (Majka, juniors Brittany Bless and Natalie Burgio and senior Katrina Smolarek- four minutes, 33 seconds).

Bless and junior Kristen Angierski also recorded sectional-qualifying times in the 400 hurdles, as well as the 100- and 200-meter dashes, respectively.
