Watch your step!

Ahh, spring! Trees unfurl their leaves, flowers bloom, the grass grows, the animal kingdom produces offspring and road surfaces receive their annual pothole-filling treatment.

There is one particularly obnoxious-looking pothole located at the intersection of Huth and Mapleview roads. This chasm is about three inches deep, nearly one foot wide and two feet across.

Potholes can do a "number" on one's vehicle, but they can also create other problems in different situations. For example, the aforementioned pothole sat smack in the middle of last Saturday's Cleveland Hill Athletic Association's annual parade.

How not everyone among the hundreds of marchers managed to escape a twisted ankle is a mystery to us. Some marchers saw the pothole in time and avoided it; others were simply fortunate to step around or over it. While we understand that there are dozens- perhaps hundreds- of potholes in town to patch after every winter, a priority must be placed when the public's safety is at risk.

The Town Board approved the routes for five Little League parades during its May 7 meeting. Were these routes inspected by anyone to ensure they were safe? We were also disappointed that two town councilmembers failed to notice this dangerous situation as they marched in Saturday's parade. Be assured that we will conduct our own inspection of the remaining parade routes and will call attention to any problems that should be addressed.
