JFK indoor tracksters set more records at RIT
Recording personal-best or school-record times seems to be the norm in recent meets for the John F. Kennedy boys and girls indoor track teams.
On Saturday at the 3rd Annual Tiger Invitational at the Rochester Institute of Technology, senior Jessica Campas set a JFK record by completing the 300-meter run in 46 seconds. Her time also placed her 12th overall.
Campas had set the old school record last season, also at RIT. The senior also finished 18th in the triple jump with a distance of 30 feet, 6.5 inches.
The girls' 4x800 relay team, comprised of juniors Jessica Stechenfinger, Denise Brucz, as well as freshman Moriah Orwat and eighth grader Jillian Golemblewski, set a school record with a time of 11:22.14, breaking the old mark (set in 1998) by 18 seconds.
Senior Candace Ping (28,' 9.75" in the triple jump), freshmen Kaylee Kukiewicz (2:02.90 in 600-meter run) and Golemblewski (2:11.28 in 600-meter run) also contributed personal best performances.
On the boys' side, senior Greg Craft finished second in the pole vault with a distance of 13 feet, while sophomore Derek Krzemian threw a personal-best distance of 40'9" in the shot put.
Also, eighth grader Nathan Odrobina ran a personal-best time of 5:15.84 in the 1,600-meter run.
So far, the following JFK athletes have qualified for the Section VI Championships: Craft (pole vault), Campas (55-meter dash), Stechenfinger (3,000-meter run, junior Chris Scharf (shot put) and sophomore Andy Wrazen (55-meter high hurdles).
Leidenfrost continues
his super track season
Depew's Jerry Leidenfrost continues to rack up impressive performances this season, as the senior took first place in the 55-meter run last weekend at the Varsity Select Invitational at Fredonia State College.
Leidenfrost finished with a time of 6.95 seconds. He has already qualified for sectionals in the 55- meter run.
