Adjusting to the times and a changing world

In today's edition of the Cheektowaga Times, we offer our readers our sixth annual Valentine's Day greetings from area elementary schools. This year's selections are presented with a heavy heart, because this will be the last time that we include Valentines from six area Catholic schools. When classes resume in September, there will be only two Catholic schools in Cheektowaga and Depew. Our first Valentines edition in 2002 included 13 Catholic schools.

Despite the loss of so many fine academic institutions, we shall continue to offer our annual Valentines- and Thanksgiving- greetings. As we have done in recent years, we shall adjust to the changing world around us.

There are many Catholic elementary schools within a few miles of Cheektowaga that we will consider for inclusion. As we prepare to say "goodbye" to Kolbe Catholic, Infant of Prague, St. Josaphat and three other schools, we will likely say "hello" to 14 Holy Helpers, Our Lady of Pompeii, Christ the King and more.

Again, this is merely an adjustment to the changing academic climate. During the past few years our readers have likely noticed other changes. For example, in 2006 we introduced our fire log and began providing news from the West Seneca School District. The fire log filled a need to keep our readers informed on how they are served by their local fire districts. With roughly 1,000 Cheektowaga students attending West Seneca schools, our coverage of that school district addressed demands for news pertinent to the southern end of town.

Times readers will notice other additions to their hometown newspaper as the year progresses. These changes will help enhance our news presentation and our desire to make Times readers even more informed and in touch with their hometown.

Irony of the week: Advertisements on the side and rear of a Metro bus that ended up on the lawn of a Walden Avenue home following a January 31 accident asked "Does transit advertising work? It just did!" Persons with a sharp eye for detail may have caught this one. A wag at the Times office was disappointed that there wasn't a "how's my driving" sign on the vehicle. All kidding aside, we tip our cap to the bus driver, who managed to avoid striking a house after a vehicle pulled out in front of him. All persons escaped without serious injury.
