JFK boys bowling grabs hold of first place
In what John F. Kennedy boys bowling head coach Pete Odrobina described as the biggest victory in his tenure, the Bears upset perennial league power Alden on January 3, propelling the locals to a hold of first place in Erie County Interscholastic Conference-IV.
JFK defeated the Bulldogs on the road, 6-1, a feat Odrobina said is uncommon for ECIC-IV squads.
"Alden just does not lose a match at home- and to do it with three junior high bowlers just makes it more amazing to me," Odrobina stated. "Talk about a team victory. This was every bit that from the word 'go.'"
The Bears' "A" team won games of 668-617, 827-709 and 707-626, triumphing overall by a score of 4,294-4,055. The "B" squad won 699-688 before later dropping a 766- 697 decision.
A trio of middle schoolers- eighth graders Zak Kuzara and Tyler Harhigh and seventh grader Zack Uzar- were instrumental in the win. Kuzara's total of 568 led all JFK bowlers, while Uzar opened his varsity career with games of 159, 161 and 156. Harhigh bowled games of 208 and 170 in the "A" squad's first two games.
Sophomore Kyle Uzar (192), senior Jerome Okonzak (221) and senior David Harhigh (223) also contributed solid individual games.
The Bears (5-1-1) tied secondplace Holland on the road Monday, 3.5-3.5. Sophomore Evan Burgos bowled a team-high game of 208.
JFK travels to local and league rival Cleveland Hill next Wednesday for a 4:30 p.m. match.
