Supervisor choice expected next week

Exercising his duty as deputy supervisor, Councilmember James J. Jankowiak presided over Monday's Town Board meeting, but a decision on who will be Cheektowaga's next top official is not expected until the Town Democratic Committee announces its endorsement on Monday.

The meeting lasted less than onehalf hour, which prompted Jankowiak to crack that those in attendance "are going to make my first meeting easy."

Cheektowaga Democratic Committee Chairman Frank Max told the Times on Tuesday that the group will meet Monday to conduct its endorsement meeting.

Max said that interviews have been conducted with all of the board members to measure the individual members' interest in the post and gather their personal recommendations to fill the position.

The Town Board will likely make the final appointment at its January 16 meeting. A work session will be held in the council office at 6 p.m. January 9.

Regular board meetings are generally held on the first and third Mondays of each month, but the next meeting is on a Tuesday because of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.

The board has accepted committee endorsements for more than 30 years.

Sources familiar with the process say that Jankowiak and Councilmember Thomas M. Johnson are the final candidates to officially succeed Dennis H. Gabryszak, who stepped down as supervisor when he became the area's representative in the New York State Assembly.

Max attended Tuesday's meeting, but did not address the board.

Near the end of Tuesday's meeting, Councilmember Patricia A. Jaworowicz said she hopes that as it moves forward the board "makes an honest, open and forthright effort now and in the future" to include residents in open government discussion as much as possible.

"I think we have the possibility for a new beginning to some degree," Jaworowicz said.
