Remembering Ja-Fa-Fa’s Dear Editor:
It’s tough to see Ja-Fa-Fa Hots, a landmark business, close after all these years. Granted, something has to be done with the intersection because of all the traffic now traveling Harlem Road, but road consruction is unfortunately forcing the closure of one of the good old spots on the Harlem strip.
I remember going there when it was owned by a guy by the name of Nelson (he and my mother worked at Curtiss Wright if I recall the story right) when I was five years old. My folks made it a treat to stop on the way home from a trip or on the way to the Buffalo Drive In. I remember that it was always something to look forward to growing up.
Living in the Bailey - Delavan area, a trip for a dog was nothing. In grammar school and on to high school, a bunch of friends wouldn’t think anything of walking down Langfield Drive, cut through the cemeteries as a shortcut to get to Ja Fa Fa’s and spent the evening. There used to be a miniature golf course behind it at which we spent a lot of time.
When we were old enough to drive, we would stop for a quick one before the Drive In. Over the years there were a lot of changes and a lot of memories, especially when they started up the Cruise Nights. Living around the corner at that time made for a nice walk to check out the cars and have a few brews.
Sooner or later all good things must come to an end. It will be missed. I hope their new venture turns out as successful.
