Zloty looks to carry on career success with Maryvale bowling
Maryvale girls bowling coach John Zloty has achieved pretty much everything there is to accomplish in a career. Now, he brings that success, which includes 13 Class B championships in the last 15 years, to the boys' side.
Zloty will coach both the Maryvale girls and boys this winter, taking over for boys coach Paul Damin. The 25th-year coach has compiled an incredible 353-3 record over his career. His girls' teams have never missed an appearance at the Section VI championships, and have reached the New York State Public High School Athletic Association championships four times.
Last season, the Lady Flyers went 10-0, winning another Erie County Interscholastic Conference-III championship and "B" title.
This year, Zloty listed returnees Lisa Tycz (senior) and Jackie Nicosia (sophomore) as the girls' top bowlers. Four key performers from last season decided not to join the team this season.
Zloty listed senior Angela Pamfil and sophomores Kayley Cartwright and Jenna Tomasello as other bowlers who could make a positive impact this winter.
The Lady Flyers finished sixth overall at the Maryvale Holiday Tournament on Monday at Airport Lanes with a score of 2,583.
On the boys' side, seniors Dallas Binner and Brian Mullen, as well as junior Pat Wangler and sophomore Tom Michalowski, return as the core of the Flyers' squad.
Zloty said sophomore newcomer Nick Nikeo and junior Shaun Crisman could also emerge as top bowlers this season.
The Flyers finished third in the Maryvale Tournament with a score of 3,033. Crisman's 702 earned him a third-overall finish in the high series.
Maryvale's coach listed local rival Cheektowaga Central and Tonawanda as the Lady Flyers' toughest competition within ECICIII. On the boys' side, Zloty stated Depew and Tonawanda could pose threats to the Flyers in league play.
Maryvale opened its season Wednesday against the Warriors, with results coming too late for press time. The Flyers face league opponent Amherst on the road Monday at 3:30 p.m.
Central's girls return sectional qualifiers Corey Bernard (junior) and Samantha Isch (senior), who are both entering their fifth year of varsity bowling. Junior Mindy Avino is also a fifth-year performer.
The Lady Warriors finished 4-6 in ECIC-III last season under eighthyear head coach Dan Kaplan. Jerry Carroll and his wife, Cindy, have professional bowling experience and assist Kaplan with coaching duties on both the boys' and girls' sides.
Kaplan stated seniors Tiffany Dziadaszek and Courtney Knopf, as well as juniors Deanna Szymkowiak and Shannon Kelly, will be top bowlers on the Lady Warriors' "B" team.
The Central boys also finished 4- 6 in league play in 2005-2006. The Warriors return just one senior, captain Shawn Gordon, although several sophomores possess four years' varsity experience.
Tyler Molina, Andy Maguda, Dan Kruszynski and Mike Myers, who are sophomores, as well as Gordon, were termed by Kaplan as his team's "Big 5." The quintuplet is entering its fourth year together on the varsity level, and Kaplan said that experience will be put to the test this year.
"We're a year older and (the coaches) are looking for them to step up," Kaplan told the Times. "A lot of our guys might be sophomores, but they're basically upperclassmen because of all of their experience."
Maguda and Molina each qualified for sectionals a year ago.
Central faces league foe Pioneer Monday at Thruway Lanes, with start time scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
Kaplan described Maryvale as "the team to beat" this season in ECIC-III, which added Springville, Amherst and Pioneer, while losing East Aurora and Williamsville South.
JFK looks to promising
youngsters to deliver
The John F. Kennedy girls bowling team may be young, but it is certainly not lacking talent, according to head coach Kyle Karmazyn.
The Lady Bears, who finished 4- 6 in ECIC-IV last season, return top bowlers Ashley Walker (freshman) and Sara Abato (eighth grader), each of whom Karmazyn said had a solid shot at qualifying for sectionals this season.
Other key youngsters returning are freshmen Kelly Astyk and Samantha Seig, as well as eighth graders Jamie Anna and Lauren Antkowiak. Karmazyn listed newcomers Heather Carey (senior), Kristen Challgrin (sophomore) and Danielle Dauer (sophomore) as potentially effective athletes.
Freshmen Allie Orzeszek and Haley Williams and seventh grader Nicole Pierce are the "B" squad's top bowlers, according to Karmazyn.
On the boys' side, the Bears enter a "season of transition," according to head coach Pete Odrobina. JFK returns just three seniors- Jerome Okonzak, David Harhigh and Eric Szymankiewicz.
"Those three have gone through our good times and have maintained their averages and composure throughout (their careers)," Odrobina stated. "Their leadership is vital this year."
Harhigh finished tied for the highest game scored at the Maryvale Tournament by rolling a 266.
Other key components on JFK's roster include junior Mike Kaminski, who returns after a year's absence, as well as sophomore Kyle Uzar and eighth graders Tyler Harhigh and Zak Kuzara.
Sophomore newcomer Evan Burgess could start. Seniors Dale Brucz and Max Wenk, as well as sophomore Mark Waliszewski, freshman Paul Czajka, eighth grader Nick Vanson and seventh Grader Zack Uzar, are also newcomers to Odrobina's squad.
Odrobina described perennial power Alden as "the team to beat" in ECIC-IV, adding that Cleveland Hill and Eden could emerge as the season develops.
The coach added that JFK, which finished 6-4 in league play last year, is dedicating its season to former bowler Anthony Nowicki, who recently passed away after an illness.
The Bears opened their season Wednesday against league opponent East Aurora, with results coming too late for press time. The locals return to action Tuesday at Lackawanna for a 4:30 p.m. contest. Cleve Hill rebuilding under
mostly youthful bowlers
Following the graduation of several key seniors from last season's squads, the Cleveland Hill girls and boys' bowling squads are looking for several new athletes to step up.
The Lady Eagles, who earned a share of the ECIC-IV title last season with an 8-2 record, return just one experienced senior- Kaylee Neureuther.
Cleve Hill head coach Mary Isch said Neureuther, as well as sophomore Devin Phillips and senior newcomer Krista Brenner, would lead the Lady Eagles.
Other starting spots, Isch stated, have yet to be decided.
Neureuther finished second at the Maryvale Holiday Tournament with a series total of 670.
On the boys' side, head coach Dan McNess listed freshman Zack Arth, sophomore Rob Zanglien and senior Phil Torsell as his "big trio." Arth rolled the third-highest game at the Maryvale Tournament with a 265.
The coach stated that sophomores Fritzie Simmeth and Justin Mach, as well as junior Rob Bennyng, would also likely start for the Eagles, who finished 4-6 in league play a year ago.
Cleve Hill opened its season Wednesday against Alden, with results coming too late for press time. The Eagles return to action next Wednesday to take on East Aurora at Airport Lanes at 4:30 p.m. Wildcats bowling squad
seeks quick transition
Despite the loss of six seniors from last season's boys bowling team, Depew head coach Adam Nagy believes his team can make a successful transition with several new starters.
The Wildcats, who one year ago finished 11-5 overall, 5-5 in ECICIII, will be led by two returning starters- seniors Brian Kraft (captain) and Jeremy Rajewski.
Nagy added that junior Steven Bukowski will also be a key component to the Wildcats' squad, with the other starting positions yet to be decided.
"We'll be a pretty good team," Nagy stated. "We'll compete with other top teams in our division."
Depew finished fourth overall at the Maryvale Tournament with a score of 3,029.
