Cleve Hill swimming returns 8 sectionalists
Cleveland Hill boys swimming coach Doug Newman knows what this year's team is capable of accomplishing. Just look at last year's statistics.
In 2005-2006, the Eagles made solid strides, finishing fourth in a very competitive Erie County Interscholastic Conference-IV with an 8- 4 record.
Cleve Hill also sent five swimmers to the Section VI championships, including returnees Josh Atzrott (senior, 100-meter butterfly and 200- meter freestyle events), Gene Williams (junior, 200 and 500 freestyle), Justin Chivetta (senior, 100 butterfly), Josh Sheller (sophomore, 100 breaststroke and 200 intermediate medley) and Jackson Taylor (junior, backstroke, intermediate medley).
Newman believes that those athletes, as well as junior Mike Vito (diving, all-around) can qualify for sectionals.
"We've got a great cast of returning swimmers," said Newman. "Based on how we finished last season, we've raised our expectations."
Cleve Hill opens its season tomorrow at home against local rival Cheektowaga Central at 4:30 p.m.
