Central hockey pounds rival Flyers; Highlanders earn three of four points
For Cheektowaga Central's varsity club hockey team, it appeared to be business as usual in routing rival Maryvale last weekend. For Cleveland Hill/John F. Kennedy, last weekend was another step towards what appears to be a breakout season.
The Warriors (5-1-1) dominated the Flyers on Saturday at the Cheektowaga Recreation Center, 12- 1, as senior forward Ron Szymkowiak led Central with five goals and one assist. Senior center Steve Nworyta added four assists, while senior forward Jared Fischer tallied two goals and a helper. Sophomore forward Tom Leone (one goal, three assists) also had a solid performance. Sophomore forward Ryan Jaracz (two goals) and defensemen Ryan Klein (senior) and Steve Flowers (sophomore) rounded out the goal-scoring.
Jordan Kasprzak earned the win in goal.
The Warriors tied City Honors, 3- 3, on Tuesday, as Fischer scored the game-tying goal with 1:42 remaining. Szymkowiak and Dennis Lark also scored for the locals.
On November 29, Central lost a non-league contest to Southtowns League foe West Seneca East, 8-1, as Warriors head coach Steve Ferrentino used every player on his bench.
Maryvale defeated Small Schools opponent St. Mary's, 5-2, on Friday. Junior defenseman Garrett Jacobs led the Flyers with one goal and one assist. Junior forward Kyle Gmerek, sophomore forward Kyle McQuaid, senior center Joe Bodkin and junior defenseman Tom Brado added single tallies. Senior forwards Christian Wheeler and Jeff Spielman, as well as freshman Dustin Krawczyk, recorded assists.
Against Central, Jacobs scored Maryvale's lone goal.
The Flyers (3-1) will face tough league foe City Honors on Sunday at the Rec Center, with face-off scheduled for 5 p.m.
Meanwhile, Cleve Hill/JFK continued its strong play early this season, cruising to a 5-1 win on Friday over Southtowns League foe Eden/ Lake Shore at Leisure Rinks.
In a balanced scoring effort, junior forward Jordan Halligan, senior defenseman Nick Torgalski, junior defenseman Chuck Eichhorn and senior center Paul Hockwater each recorded a goal and an assist. Senior forward Paul Hockwater (one assist) and junior defenseman Bob Davies (one goal) also contributed points for the locals.
Senior co-captain Sean Olejniczak, the team's leading scorer, missed the game.
Freshman goaltender Mitchell Simmons earned his first varsity win between the pipes.
On Monday, the Highlanders (3- 1-2) tied St. Francis, 3-3, as Hockwater helped secure a point by tying the game late in the third period. Cleve Hill/JFK opened the scoring when Halligan hit the back of the net off a feed from Eichhorn. Sophomore Jake White also recorded an assist.
Senior goaltender Jeff Smith stopped 26 of 29 shots.
With the tie, the Highlanders moved to within one point of St. Francis in the Southtowns Small School League. The teams will face each another again on January 5.
Cleve Hill/JFK returns to action tomorrow in the Tri-State High School Tournament in Erie, Pennsylvania against Erie-based Harborcreek at The Igloo Rink, with face-off scheduled for 9:30 p.m.
