Five 'musts' during the holiday season

Because there are nearly five weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas, we would like to offer five suggestions for things to do and enjoy in Cheektowaga during the Christmas season. There are many fine holiday jewels right here in town to check out. The following are our picks for "must-do" activities. Best of all, they're FREE!

1. Get your child's picture taken with Santa in the caboose at Niagara Hobby and Craft Mart. Most residents are familiar with the little red caboose, a rare 1949 model, at the Union Road store. St. Nick will be inside the caboose every Saturday and Sunday November 25-December 17 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. If you don't have a camera, Niagara Hobby will gladly take a picture and you can pick it up the next day.

2. Go to the annual tree-lighting ceremony. Sponsored by the Cheektowaga Patriotic Committee, this year's lighting at Stiglmeier Park takes place on December 9 at 6:30 p.m. The Village of Depew hosts its annual tree-lighting ceremony on December 9 at 6 p.m. in Veterans' Park, on Terrace Boulevard. Santa will pull double duty, appearing at both ceremonies.

3. Enjoy the town's annual Winter Recreation Celebration. Toss a fruitcake. Enjoy a Glenn Colton concert with your children. Tempt your taste buds at the chili cook-off and cookie bake-off. Go ice skating. Meet some sled dogs or go for a hay ride. The annual festivities take place December 8-10 in Stiglmeier and Town parks. For more information, call the Town Parks, Recreation and Youth Services Department at 897-7207.

4. Attend a local high school concert. Take a break from the Muzak piped into the local stores and enjoy the musical talents of your neighbor's children. Many of the high schools have their annual performances on separate nights, providing you an opportunity to attend more than one. The Times next week will publish a schedule of holiday concerts at the local schools.

5. Watch the area's best community orchestra. The Cheektowaga Community Symphony Orchestra performs "Sounds of the Season" on December 17 at 3 p.m. at St. John Gualbert Church, 83 Gualbert Avenue. John Landis will conduct the orchestra and WIVB- 4 Meteorologist Mary Beth Wrobel will be the guest soprano soloist. The orchestra will be joined by the Cheektowaga Community Chorus. The traditional Christmas carol sing-along follows. Donations will be accepted at the event, but not required.
