Editorial Great players, great people
Two local varsity football teams deserve some praise for their poise and strong character both on and off the gridiron this season. In recent years, Central, Cleveland Hill and Depew have all displayed character while enjoying runs to the postseason. This year, John F. Kennedy and Maryvale both earn kudos.
JFK has one of the most memorable end-of-season traditions in the area. After the final home game, the seniors line up at the far end zone and walk the length of the field as their teammates, family and friends cheer. It's an emotional end to a high school career, and for anyone who has witnessed this moment, it is difficult not to be touched. These players have learned how to be gracious and humble young men.
Maryvale players appear to have built a foundation for the future of their football program. What is outstanding about this team is the manner in which the players have grown together. The players last July teamed up to help construct a house through the Habitat For Humanity program. The team has built a foundation of teamwork and has learned how to give something back to their community- and their community has noticed.
We salute these teams and their contributions. We also look forward to the season when all five local schools play during the same glorious weekend at Ralph Wilson Stadium.
