JFK's Stechenfinger qualifies for states again
John F. Kennedy High School junior Jessica Stechenfinger is getting so accustomed to qualifying for the New York State Public High School Athletic Association competition, she may as well make reservations ahead of time next year, barring injury.
     Last weekend, Stechenfinger qualified for states for the third consecutive season in cross country, battling snowy conditions during the Section VI competition in Bemus Point to finish with a time of 22 minutes, 13 seconds.

Depew and Maryvale come up short in Class B semifinals of boys volleyball
There will not be a pair of local teams playing each other in the Section VI Class B boys volleyball final, thanks to top seeds Eden and Williamsville South flexing their muscles Saturday.
     Top seeded Eden (30-0) ended No. 4 seed Maryvale's season in the semifinals at Clarence High School, defeating the Flyers in straight sets, 25-12, 25-13 and 25-19.

Gasiecki heading to states in girls' gymnastics event
     Maryvale High School junior Erica Gasiecki on Saturday advanced to the New York State Public High School Athletic Association competition in gymnastics. Gasiecki scored a 34.35 in the all-around event at the Section VI championships at Williamsville South, and she will participate in the floor event

Cleve Hill swimming sends six to sectionals
The Cleveland Hill girls swimming team will be well-represented at the Section VI competition today and Saturday at Erie Community College's Burt Flickinger Center, as six Lady Eagles are participating.
     Senior Courtney Hanzlian, juniors Kristen Rohe and Lauren Habermehl, sophomores Ashley Bajer and Katie Tomaschko and eighth grader Lauren Tomaschko will swim in various events.

     Bottled up by a tough Maryvale defense for much of the second half, Underwood broke a 14-14 tie when he got loose for a 75-yard touchdown run with one minute, 23 seconds remaining. The play gave Lackawanna a 20-14 lead, and the Steelers (9-0) held on to win by that same score.

Versatile Mohr of Flyers earns defensive award
Blessed with a great pair of hands, good height and an uncanny ability to contribute clutch plays, Maryvale High School senior and football safety Matt Mohr is the Times' 2006 Defensive Player of the Year.
     Mohr had an outstanding allaround season, recording five interceptions, 55 tackles and two fumble recoveries. The senior was one of the leaders on the balanced Flyers, who advanced to the Class B championship game for the first time since 1992.
