Depew girls breaking school records, winning meets in swimming action
School records and opposing teams have been falling at the hands of the Depew girls swimming team this fall, thanks to outstanding efforts from a balanced mix of upper-and underclassmen.
The Lady Wildcats, 6-1 overall, 6- 0 in Erie County Interscholastic Conference-III play, defeated league foe Holland last Friday, 107-63.
Seven Depew swimmers have already qualified for sectionals, including junior Kelly Benczkowski, sophomore Corrin Billi and freshman Jenna Majka, who made the competition in diving, as well as senior Jordan Myers (200 IM, 100- meter fly and 100-meter breaststroke), eighth grader Jamie Reidy (200 IM, 100-meter fly), freshman Julie Strychalski (200-meter freestyle, 50-meter freestyle, 100- meter freestyle and 100-meter backstroke) and senior Krista Wayne (100-meter breaststroke).
Sectionals will take place at Erie Community College's Burt Flickinger Center from November 9- 11.
Strychalski has broken school records in the 200 medley, 200-meter freestyle, 50-meter freestyle, 100- meter freestyle, 500-meter freestyle, 200-meter free relay and 100-meter backstroke. Myers and her younger sister, Taylor, who is a sophomore, have each shattered Depew marks in the 200 medley and 200-meter free relay. Wayne also broke a school record in the 200 medley, while senior Alissa Amorosi, the 200-meter free relay.
Athletes qualifying for the ECIC League A competition, taking place November 26-28 at Sweet Home High School, include Amorosi and her younger sister, Brandy, a sophomore, in the 100- and 50-meter freestyles, 50-meter freestyle, 100- meter backstroke and 200 IM, as well as junior Rachel Bracikowski (200 IM, 100 fly and 100-meter backstroke), sophomore Stacie Dudkowski (100-meter backstroke), Taylor Myers (100-meter freestyle and 50 freestyle), junior Maggie Needham (100-meter breaststroke), senior Stephanie Paluch (200-meter freestyle, 100-meter freestyle and 50-meter freestyle).
Sophomores Lacey Staniszewski (500-meter freestyle) and Ashley Weselak (200-meter freestyle and 500-meter freestyle), as well as eighth grader Miranda Smaczniak (200-meter freestyle, 500-meter freestyle, 200 IM and 100-meter breaststroke), have also qualified for the ECIC competition.
Lady Wildcats head coach Jamie Johnson said the following swimmers have made vast improvements in their personal times this fall: juniors Melanie Block (50-meter freestyle and 100-meter freestyle), Sarah Nowak (100-meter freestyle), Sarah Reger (100-meter breaststroke) and Katie Turvey (diving); and sophomores Carlene Derkovitz (50-meter freestyle), Crystal Frohnheiser (100-meter fly), Kaitlin Gorski (100-meter freestyle), Betsy Hall (50-meter freestyle, 100-meter freestyle) and Stephanie McMahon (100-meter backstroke).
Freshmen Kristen Maturski (100- meter backstroke), Ariel Russell (50- meter freestyle) and Alex Ziccardi (100-meter freestyle, 50-meter freestyle and 100 fly), as well as seniors Michelle Spencer (diving) and Kristen Wodarczak (50-meter freestyle) and seventh grader Emily Staebell (diving), have also shown improvement.
Depew faces Alden on the road tomorrow at 4:30 p.m., before returning home Tuesday against East Aurora, also at 4:30 p.m.
