| Buoyed by a collection of young, talented athletes, Cleveland Hill's varsity swimming team seems to have a good chance at posting its first winning season in quite a while.
Despite their 95-90 loss to Tonawanda Tuesday, the Lady Eagles are off to a 2-1 start this fall, just one win behind last year's entire victory output (3-5 record).
Head coach Doug Newman, in his third year at the helm, listed the strong performances of juniors Kristen Rohe (200-and 100-meter free races) and Lauren Habermehl, eighth graders Lauren Tomaschko (500 free) and Morgan Taylor (50 and 100 free), sophomores Ashley Bajer (backstroke and 200 IM), senior Courtney Hanzlian, as well as senior captains Crista Brenner (50 and 100 free) and Cassie Vito (100 fly and 100 backstroke), as reasons for his team's resurgence.
Tomaschko, who is a first-year swimmer, already broke the Lady Eagles' school record in the 500 free earlier this season with a time of five minutes, 53.75 seconds.
"The goal we had as a team coming into this fall was to have a winning record," said Newman, who added that he believes that any of the eight aforementioned girls can qualify for sectionals in early November. "We've got a good mix of girls with experience and leadership. It's been three or four years since we had a winning record here, but I think we've got a good chance to do it this fall."
Other upperclassmen comprising Cleve Hill's roster include juniors Kaitlyn Brostociz and Kathy Haynes and seniors Ashlee Bielanin, Carly Rehac and Teressa Watson.
The Lady Eagles face league opponent Lackawanna at home tomorrow at 4:30 p.m.
