Chambers, Depew host Suozzi, Faso

Polls indicate that gubernatorial candidate Eliot Spitzer has a commanding lead on both his challenger in the September 12 Democratic primary and the Republican candidate in November's general election, but that isn't keeping Tom Suozzi and John Faso from delivering their messages to the public.

The two will bring their messages to Depew on September 5 during a scheduled one-hour "Town Hall" meeting at Depew High School.

Suozzi, a Democrat, and Faso, a Republican, will discuss their individual campaigns when they address the "Unshackle Upstate" agenda that has been adopted by many area chambers of commerce, including the one representing Cheektowaga.

The 7 p.m. meeting, hosted by the Western New York Chamber Alliance, is free and open to the public.

According to the Alliance, the questioning will focus on issues specific to Western New York's business community.

A panel, which has yet to be named, will pose questions to the candidates.

The public is invited to address the candidates, but those wishing to do so are advised to arrive early to sign in.

Cheektowaga Chamber of Commerce President and Chief Executive Officer Debra S. Liegl said that she expects the meeting to be conducted in similar fashion to one hosted by WKBW-TV at the University at Buffalo on Monday.

"I think it will be very interesting," Liegl added. "I'm hoping that the difference from what we saw on Monday will be that Tuesday there will be more questions that are Erie County-related."

Liegl added that she hasn't seen any of the questions under consideration by the Alliance.

While Suozzi and Faso accepted their invitations, Spitzer declined to participate. A Chamber Alliance spokesperson said Spitzer has a prior engagement.

Spitzer, New York State's current attorney general, has declined most opportunities to attend Town Hall style meetings and debates.

The Western New York Chamber Alliance is an organization comprised of the chief executive officers of 26 regional chambers.

Depew High School is located at 5201 S. Transit Road, just north of Como Park Boulevard.

Advance tickets may be obtained by calling the Lancaster Area Chamber of Commerce at (716) 681-9755.
