Tokasz ending 18year Assembly career
New York State Assembly Majority Leader Paul A. Tokasz announced today that he will not seek reelection this fall, ending an 18-year reign as the representative of the 143rd Assembly District.
The Cheektowaga Democrat cited a desire to spend more time with his family as a major factor in his decision. He noted that he has missed District. many special moments in his grandchildren's lives because of his frequent trips to Albany.
"My decision is all about the family, and particularly the grandkids, and having more time to spend with them and the rest of the family," Tokasz said.
Tokasz noted, too, that his parents- both of whom he credited for instilling his desire to participate in the community- are both in their 80s.
"I want to be with them," he said.
Tokasz said that he has no plans for the future, except to help Eliot Spitzer win November's gubernatorial race.
"My hope is that as 'one door closes, another may open,'" Tokasz said, "and that I will continue to work within this community to be a positive influence on our region."
Asked what he believes was his legacy, or best moment as an assemblyman, Tokasz said he is proud to have secured $50 million for the 1993 World University Games that were held in Buffalo. Tokasz noted the money helped build many new facilities that are used today to attract regional and national events.
He is also proud of work that has helped Roswell Park and the Buffalo "Medical Campus" grow.
Tokasz also stressed that he is not stepping dow for medical reasons.
"It's not a health issue; I'm fine," Tokasz said.
Who will run on the Democratic ticket is unclear at this time. Party nominating petitions must be delivered to their headquarters by July 13.
Two Cheektowaga names immediately mentioned were Town Supervisor Dennis H. Gabryszak and Councilmember Jeff Swiatek.
Whoever is named to run on the Democratic ticket will face Republican Jeff Sell
More details, including reaction from the Democrat and Republican parties, will follow in the July 20 edition of the Times.
