Home improvement scammers targeting elderly, police warn

Cheektowaga police are reminding residents of the Latin phrase "caveat emptor," or "let the buyer beware," when they consider hiring home improvement contractors to perform work this spring. Spring is a popular time for residents to clean their yards or make other improvements to their properties such as painting their homes or sealing driveways.

However, staring at a 3-0 deficit against the Lady Gators in the fifth inning, the Lady Lancers scraped together enough timely hits to maintain their perfect record.

Heading into Tuesday afternoon's rivalry game against Maryvale, the Cheektowaga Central baseball team had lost five league games this spring by a total of seven runs. Warriors sophomore pitcher Jon Klein wasn't about to let another close game slip away against the Flyers, pitching a masterpiece.

Cleve Hill grad Burton signs with Cincinnati

Following two years with the Denver Broncos, Cleveland Hill High School graduate Antwon Burton is bringing his National Football League services a bit closer to home. Burton, a defensive tackle and 2001 graduate of Cleve Hill, signed a two-year contact with the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday.

Lady Flyers' J.V. softball keeps winning streak going

The Maryvale junior varsity softball team won three straight nailbiters in recent action, surviving one-run games against Depew, Starpoint and Cheektowaga Central. Last Wednesday, the Lady Flyers came back to edge Depew, 3-2, as freshman Jennie Heisler recorded the game-winning hit in the bottom of the ninth inning.

A 25-year-old Buffalo man and a 44-year-old West Seneca woman were arrested for criminal possession of a controlled substance after police responded to a separate incident in the area of Como Park Boulevard and Bellevue Avenue.
