'Watch Your Car' program scheduled

The Crime Resistance Unit of the Cheektowaga Police Department will host on July 10 two free programs designed to deter thiefs from stealing vehicles.

The "Watch Your Car" program includes a window sticker program and a VIN etching program and will be offered at Rescue Fire Hall, 20 Pine Ridge Road (near Walden Avenue) from 3:30-7:30 p.m.

In the window sticker program, a highly-reflective sticker is placed in a vehicle's window. If a police officer sees a vehicle with this sticker in the windshield being driven between 1-5 a.m., he is authorized to stop the vehicle.

The VIN etching portion involves the etching of the vehicle's "Vehicle Identification Number" into the window. Car thiefs are less likely to steal a vehicle with the VIN etched in the window because etched windows are unattractive to "chop shops."

Participants are asked to enter the fire hall from the Euclid Avenue side.
