Town taxes
Dear Editor:
Our Cheektowaga Supervisor and Board Members Johnson and Jankowiak have publicly stated they are in favor of the county sharing the one percent sales tax with the city, towns and school districts.
They have raised the town taxes 20 percent in the last two years with another tax increase this year while the county has lowered our taxes by 31 percent.
When we complain about the high taxes they hide behind the contract obligations. What they don’t say is they approved these contracts.
In Sloan the trash is picked up by the garbagemen. In Cheektowaga our trash is picked up by sanitation engineers whose yearly salary is higher then what we pay our starting teachers.
It’s time we told our Town Board if they can’t hold the line on taxes we will vote for someone who will.

Empire Zones
Dear Editor:
Yes, it is the economy, stupid. Stop tinkering with Empire Zones. Especially now, as the recession is just ending (if you believe the statistics) we need all the help we can get in giving our local economy a jump start.
Governor Pataki had his work cut out for him back in 1995 to bring jobs back to our area and to stop companies from leaving Western New York.
Today, as the nation pulls out of recession, the Governor is fighting yet again for each job here, and the Niagara Falls Empire Zones help. National Vacuum’s planned expansion is in the zone and the expansion brings 60 great jobs here.
Governor Pataki has used tax free Empire Zones to attract businesses and their jobs across New York. It works. Follow his lead.
